After the main database has been install from the CD-ROM, each user's workstation requires a 'setup' in order to use the FIX product.  To ensure that multi-user FIX executes properly, check a few items first.

  1. Database ZIM0099 must be read-only
  2. Netbios must be available on the server and client computers (see here for details on this)
  3. Share the folder above where the database resides.  This typically means that when you install FIX on the server you will install it into a sub-folder, not a 'Root' folder.  A recommended path for the server folder would be 'C:\FIX\PROD'.  Then share folder 'FIX' as 'FIX' on the network.

Prior to using any of these utilities, ensure that your 'FIX.INI' file located in this database directory has the correct entry for the key 'ZIMRevision=6.00'.  To view instructions on installation for the main database directory see 'Getting Started'.  This download requires the standard password for your 'AASYS' FIXUserid.

Two methods exist to perform this 'user setup' for each workstation.  The first method of user setup, called usetup.exe is not very flexible, and creates shortcuts or start menu entries specifically for the one database directory from where the 'usetup.exe' was run.  The advantage to this method is that if you can map a drive letter to the database path, then this method is extremely simple to use.

The second method is more flexible, and installs more workstation software to allow Crystal Reports to be run, and the flexibility to change which database will be accessed.  The second method is called by using the 'setup.exe' from the subdirectory 'client' off of the main database directory.  This method also supports UNC style folder names.   To install ODBC drivers for the workstation, the recommended method is to use the separate install from the sub directory odbcdrv\setup32\setup.exe.

Method One - Usetup:

1. Using either a command line prompt or windows explorer execute 'USETUP.EXE' (located within the main database directory of FIX).  This creates the unique workpath as a sub directory(subfolder) of the database directory and defaults FIXUserid to the same name.  Click Next to proceed to the User Setup Options.

Usetup

User Setup Options.  Ensure the User_Workpath Component is selected.  This will optionally install the ODBC driver for the FIX database as a DSN on your workstation machine.  The revision of this driver is 1.6 and as of March/2000 revision 2.0 is available. Revision 2.0 executes faster and is available by using it's separate setup process ( see sub directory file odbcdrv\setup32\setup.exe off of the database directory).   Click Next to proceed to the Start Menu name dialog.

Start Menu name dialog.  Ensure that this name is entered correctly.

Usetup_StartMenu.gif (13602 bytes)

Taking the defaults on remaining dialogs, will produce a start menu to use the FIX product on this workstation, and not install the ODBC drivers.  When completed this program will execute ZSETVARS to allow the user to verify the machines registry values.   Ensure that the Zim Version being configured is 6.00, and remaining tabs both point to the database directory.

NOTE: This method uses a version of Install-It that is 16bit software and has been known to sometimes hang at completion on some versions of WindowsNT workstations.  If this happens, simply use the task manager or CTRL-ALT-DEL to end this task, the process will have completed, and the users setup will have completed.

Method Two - FIX Workstation Setup

1. Using either a command line prompt or windows explorer execute 'SETUP.EXE' (located within the sub directory call 'client' off of the main database directory of FIX).   This creates the unique workpath as a sub directory(subfolder) of the machine's 'program files\ironwood\fix' directory.   Click Next to proceed to the User Setup Options.

You must have a valid FIX serial number.  Contact your FIX coordinator.   Click next, and proceed to the 'Destination Folder' option dialog.

FIX_Workstation_Serialno.gif (10113 bytes)

The 'Destination Folder' defaults to the 'program files\ironwood\fix' directory.   You may change it to another directory or sub directory of the FIX database if required, however, the best performance is to take the default on this dialog, and click next to proceed to the Server Database Path.

FIX_Workstation_DB.gif (8512 bytes)

The Server Database Path is now available with this method of setting up a workstation as a UNC style pathname.  This removes the need to have a dedicated drive mapping to the database directory.  Use standard windows browsing techniques to locate the database directory and click OK.  Take the defaults for all the remaining dialog boxes.  This will install start menus for the 'Workstation', 'FIX', and the ODBC Setup.

FIX_Workstation_SM.gif (2149 bytes)  The FIX Workstation selection allows the user to change their database directory on the fly without having to create unique start menu entries.  The 'FIX' start menu option immediately executes the FIX product based upon the defaults setup during the installation.  The ODBC Driver setup will install the lastest drivers (2.00 as at Nov14/00).  By default this installation will have already created a user DSN for FIX using ODBC drivers revision 1.6.  If you wish to make another DSN using the latest 2.0 drivers, install these drivers using the ODBC Driver Setup selection, and then the windows control panel option for ODBC Data Sources (32bit).

NOTE: This method two was written using Install Shield's latest software providing 32bit installation / rollback and remove functions.
